Labour TENS Machines: A Natural, Drug-Free Comfort Option
Labour TENS machine hire across South-East Queensland, prepared by a midwife.
If you're planning for a calm, natural birth, you've probably come across labour TENS machines. They're one of the most popular drug-free comfort options for early labour, and they're simple, portable and completely in your control. Here's a proper look at what they are, how they work, and how to know if one is right for you.
What is a labour TENS machine?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A labour TENS machine is a small, handheld device that connects to soft adhesive pads (electrodes) placed on your lower back.
Unlike a general TENS unit you might use for back pain, a maternity TENS machine is built specifically for labour. The main difference is the boost button, which lets you send a stronger pulse the moment a contraction starts, then ease off again once it passes.
How does a TENS machine work during labour?
The machine sends gentle electrical pulses through the pads on your back. Most women find it works in two ways: it gives your brain something else to focus on besides the contraction, and it's thought to help trigger your body's own natural pain-relieving endorphins.
You stay in full control the whole time. You set the strength yourself, build it up as a contraction rises, and hit the boost button for extra support at the peak. Because it's non-invasive and drug-free, it can be used entirely on its own or alongside other comfort measures like a birth ball, warm shower, or breathing techniques.
Why women choose a labour TENS machine
- Drug-free and natural, so you stay fully present and alert.
- Portable and lightweight, so you can keep moving, rocking or resting while you use it.
- Fully adjustable, with a boost button you control for each contraction.
- Easy to start early, at home, well before you head in to hospital or your birth centre.
- Useful after birth too, with many women using it to help ease afterpains and cramping in the days that follow.
When should I start using it?
Most women pop the pads on and start using their TENS machine in early labour, often while they're still at home. Starting early tends to work best, since it gives you time to get used to the sensation and build the intensity gradually rather than trying to figure it out once contractions are already strong.
Your instruction manual will guide you through correct pad placement and settings. A couple of general things worth knowing:
- TENS units aren't waterproof. Take the pads off before a bath, shower, or birth pool.
- If you move on to continuous monitoring or an epidural later in labour, you'll usually be asked to remove the pads at that point.
Is a TENS machine right for me?
A labour TENS machine is a comfort option, not a medical treatment, and it doesn't replace medical care or pain relief. It's generally not recommended if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, or if you have epilepsy, without your doctor's clearance first.
Everyone's labour is different, and what works beautifully for one person might not suit another. Please read the instructions before use, and have a chat with your midwife, doctor or care provider if you're ever unsure whether TENS is suitable for you.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a prescription to hire a TENS machine for labour?
No. A maternity TENS machine is classed as a comfort device rather than a medical treatment, so you don't need a referral or prescription to hire one.
Can I use a TENS machine in the bath or shower?
No. Keep the unit and pads away from water, and remove them before a bath, shower, or birth pool.
Can I use a TENS machine if I have a pacemaker or epilepsy?
Generally not without medical clearance first. Check with your doctor or midwife before use if this applies to you.
Can I still use a TENS machine if I want an epidural?
Yes, plenty of women use TENS through early labour and move on to other pain relief later. Once you're on continuous monitoring or have an epidural in place, you'll usually be asked to remove the pads.
How long can I hire a TENS machine for?
We offer 2-week, 4-week and 6-week hire periods, timed around your due date so your kit is ready before labour begins.
How much does it cost to hire a TENS machine?
Hire is $50 for 2 weeks, $65 for 4 weeks, or $75 for 6 weeks, plus a $90 refundable deposit that's returned once the kit is brought back in the same condition.
